Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea
I always find it unfortunate that significant and complex issues, particularly during election campaigns, are often reduced to ten second soundbites. In Australia right now, we have many challenges and opportunities lying before us – not least those concerning the environment, social welfare, education, health, and our population. Even more than this, it seems as an extraordinary nation we have immense potential to be global leaders - bristling with vision and backed up by gritty resolve – willing to address global challenges through our own actions internally, and those directed externally. It seems all-too-often that we are fooled to believe that one’s capacity to “take care of ourselves” is jeopardised if we take an outward look towards others (be they in Australia, or in the world).
If we are to keep moving forward as a nation I think we need great leadership (perhaps another post), but also the ability to cope with the complexity of issues and the capacity to seek truth. One of the greatest ways for us to achieve this is to move beyond simple soundbites and engage more deeply with story.
Regardless of your views on asylum seekers, this film project (which needs support) looks like one of the ways we might start exploring one of the hot-topics of the election (and the last ten or more years)… From the film’s website:
There is growing concern about the number of asylum seekers coming by boat from Indonesia to Australia. Are these people actually refugees? How do we know if their claims are genuine? Have Australia’s recent policy changes opened the floodgates? Through hidden camera footage and interviews with asylum seekers, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea gives a visceral insight to the prequel of the story of a ‘boat person’.
